Pepperdine at UCLA

Surprise?(or not) guest was Jada Hart.

Score from UCLA

#15 Pepperdine 6, #22 UCLA 1
Feb 18, 2016 at Los Angeles, CA (Los Angeles Tennis Center)

Doubles competition
1. McPhillips/Harrison (UCLA) def. #3 CUTURA/MADDOX (PEP) 6-2

The Waves didn't get overwhelmed, but committed tons of errors, especially Christine. They are actually pretty big hitters, but mainly committed drive errors. Didn't approach the net a lot, methinks.

2. #21 STEFANI/RUNGLERDKRIANGKRAI (PEP) def. Fleming/Shaffer (UCLA) 6-1

Luisa was just too good.

3. #57 GULBE/MILOVANOVIC (PEP) def. Wiley/Miller (UCLA) 7-6 (7-4)

Hmm, at first Alaina was using angles very well, making drive winners and such. G/M resisted well though, attacked lines, defended well, won some net duels. UCLA dbls #3 was a problem last season as well; really too bad Gabby Andrews couldn't make it.

Singles competition
1. #6 STEFANI, Luisa (PEP) def. #18 Catherine Harrison (UCLA) 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-8)

Had to leave at TB 7-7 lol. Either watch it to the finish or get a parking ticket or worse, get my car towed lol. Heard it was terrible from Yaz Schnack some years ago haha, so didn't want to take any chances.

As I said, a toss-up. Cat's power was good enough, variety as well. Served and attacked Luisa's serves well, too.  Luisa is just a total package. Can do everything. Opening the court, attacking sharply and deep, returning well, even variety...a very good balanced player imo.

So, Luisa is killing Pac 12 aces one by one lol. Who's next, Maegan Manasse first, then Taylor Davidson lol.

2. Kyle McPhillips (UCLA) def. GULBE, ,Laura (PEP) 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-6)

I was pretty impressed with Pepperdine top 3's defensive ability. They don't just retrieve; can actually put pace on it, or redirect it. Impressive stuff.  So Laura could have a competitive match against Kyle, no small feat of course.  Kyle was the bigger hitter, also with better variety, but really had to work to win those points. She committed lots of drive error as well haha, some forced ones against Laura's aggression.

3. #67 MILOVANOVIC, Dzina (PEP) def. Alaina Miller (UCLA) 6-2, 6-2

Very impressed with Dzina. Well I did say that Pepperdine freshman class is one of the best. Had no problem hanging with Alaina, at all. Moreover could actually attack sidelines; so sharp. Better mover than Matea so Pepperdine coaches did well to put her at #3 I guess.
So rallies were long and Alaina didn't win much points there, as usual commited errors or got counterattacked. And decisively, serve, as usual lol. Dzina served very well; Alaina, not so much haha. Got beaten fair and square.

4. CUTURA, Matea (PEP) def. Kristin Wiley (UCLA) 7-5, 6-1

Didn't really watch the lower positions, but that's quite an effort by Kristin in the 1st set. When I glimpsed later she wasn't bad. Matea's drive condition seemed pretty good though.

5. RUNGLERDKRIANGKRAI,A (PEP) def. Terri Fleming (UCLA) 7-5, 6-0

Terri's condition didn't seem too good. Had some mobility problem?

6. CAPANNOLO, Michaela (PEP) def. Laura Luca (UCLA) 6-3, 6-1

Match Notes
Pepperdine 5-1; National ranking #15 UCLA 5-2; National ranking #22
Order of finish: Doubles (2,1,3); Singles (6,3,5,4,2,1)
