2016 Irvine Day 2

Consolation matches at WHS started at 8 so couldn't bird Santa Ana river to spot that rare Tufted Duck.

UCD, CP, and of course CSF coach were at the venue. CU coach came today. And TCU?

CDM Sea Kings? Who is that.

R2 Elvena Gevargiz d. Jennifer Richards 6-4; 7-5

R seems to have gotten better? Certainly seems stronger than at Ojai...could attack quite sharply. G was the bigger hitter, but the match was as the score suggest, quite tight. G's movement could be better methinks(say more offense oriented?).

R2 Rebecca Berger d. Theresa Papikian 1-6; 6-4; 1-0(8)

R2 Anya Lamoreaux d. Alexa Ryngler Def (ns)

R2 (6) Anastasiya Joyner d. (8) Katya Tabachnik 6-4; 6-3

R2 (9) Elle Christensen d. Jadie Acidera 4-6; 6-4; 1-0(7)

Glad I made the trip. So that Smith Stearns girl yesterday was C. Both were good. The reason why this 'local' tournament attracts college from all over. Another very tight match. Had to leave later to watch Martinelli vs Lin(suspected this would be played at court 1 at CBB).

16 Rena Lin d. (1) Samantha Martinelli 6-2; 2-6; 6-4

Only watched a bit, till the early 2nd set or something. As I said I was going to watch G14 singles at HCP. L could produce width quite effortlessly, impressive. She always had power but now can aim the lines at will. M was the bigger hitter, no surprise of course. Is Sam really going to Yale? Should ask her tomorrow lol.

Girls' 14 Singles

Glad I made the trip. From Darkness(CBB) to Light(HCP)!. I miss GA too, maybe I should attend it again..

16 (2) Maxi Duncan d. Goldie La 6-1; 7-5
16 (5) Leyden Games d. (9) Avantika Willy 7-6(5); 7-5

16 Madison Kane d. (4) Olivia McIntosh-Adams 3-6; 6-3; 7-5

Only could watch the...3rd set? Was OMA the blondie? She seems to have very nice touch. She's doubles #2 seed, no surprise probably. Could drive quite well, too. Nice form.

16 (9) Katja Wiersholm d. (7) Allura Zamarripa 6-3Ret (inj)

Katja doesn't look like Henrik(who's quite...handsome haha) lol. Could aim the lines, but of course so young. Z had nice variety.

16 (8) JUSTINE DONDONAY d. (9) ASHLEY KUA 6-4; 6-1

16 (3) Misa Malkin d. (9) Winta Woldeab 6-3; 1-6; 6-4

Was Malkin the taller girl? She seemed to have impressive variety. Too bad couldn't watch this much, didn't know it went to 3rd.

16 Kimberly Hance d. Shreya Ravilla 2-6; 6-1; 7-6(4)

Last MD match to finish? Another quality match. Kimberly really looks like her elder sister Kenadi haha. Play style seems quite similar, as well. Uber aggressive, and continued to hit aggressively to the end. Certainly was fearless. R was also a very good hitter and could produce sufficient width.

Against her, Kimberly also showed nice defense as well, once making a very difficult on the run fh passing shot, even hitting it half a tempo late. Like Kenadi, was comfortable at net.
R had a long bathroom break when Kim served for the match, that reminded me of National match Kingsley vs Kenin.  Should I ask 'coach' Falcon if Kingsley is still going to attend LSU.

And what about NU class of 2017.  I have a sneaking suspicion/hunch that Steph Schrage might go there, but should ask the coach Dasso? I mean her coming here means that they already finished recruiting for 2017?

16 (1) Jenna DeFalco d. (9) Maribella Zamarripa 6-4; 6-4

Best match. Both were very good. Future stars played G14, as I recall. My first was watching Liu and McKenzie, then 'Les Enfant Terribles' SJ and Car(they won doubles). Last season Hayer won doubles but missed that match.

Jenna was the more proactive player just like Kimberly, and she could actually keep the ball in play. Low drives but enough margin to clear the net. Very nice variety as well.

Later at CBB, watched a bit of Burger vs Deng(D could produce pace quite effortlessly, so B had work cut out for her), and also Choy/Wan vs Deming/VL. D/VL chose to come to the net, a natural tactic since they won't be winning the drive duel against the bigger hitters C/W.  Their variety is good enough to pull that off.
Then rain came, so hurried home. Hopefully the doubles matches get canceled and resumed tomorrow at DSLP lol.
