2016 Irvine Day 3

Sacrificing birding today morning to write recaps..arrived home yesterday around 11pm lol. Did finally spot that uber rare Tufted Duck at Yorba Linda(Nixon's birthplace!) yesterday morning though. That Santa Ana river around Lakeview ave. is really good. Found all kinds of ducks except Tufted lol, but luckily met a birder at the bridge later(I was looking at the wrong direction!). Spotted 40 species, not bad. Bolsa Chica birding the day before was fruitful as well, despite missing that American Tree Sparrow.

Only...CU coach and 'the Legend' left? Or did other coaches watch G18 MD singles at HCP. Too bad, but we'll know about NU 2017 recruiting and Kingsley soon enough.
First watched G14 MD singles at HCP from 3pm(Curse the weather), then left to DSLP to watch G18 singles consolation and hopefully doubles.

Q (2) Maxi Duncan d. (5) Leyden Games 7-5; 7-6(6)

Games was not bad at all. Her form sorta reminded me of Goulak. Just glimpsed a bit.

Q (9) Katja Wiersholm d. Madison Kane 6-0; 6-0

Wait a minute I thought Kane was the black girl; McIntosh-Adams is an Irish-sounding name lol, my bad. Didn't know who was who, Kane and OMA. Anyway, it was not a blowout, the points were long. Again impressed with Kane's form(one local player to root for haha). Katja could do both well, attacking and actually sustaining the level in long rallies.

Q (3) Misa Malkin d. (8) JUSTINE DONDONAY 6-4; 6-3

Too bad couldn't watch this, just glimpsed a bit.

Q (1) Jenna DeFalco d. Kimberly Hance 6-2; 6-2

Watched a bit. Good match. At first H was almost overwhelming D with her uber-aggression. Flying fh seems good. Ultimately maybe D was the better hitter, but the points were long, both playing well. H really seems like a balanced player, also playing defense quite well.

CQ Audrey Boch-Collins d. (4) Sedona Gallagher 6-3; 6-3

Future Fed Cup teammates(along with Cheong..look out for Intermountain in the future! Continually producing good players)! Naturally concentrated on this match first. Both really wanted to win lol(ABC is especially..passionate).
ABC is such a good defender. G netted tons, not in best condition. Passed well at times. Later in the 2nd it became sorta moonball-fest, and the match actually was neverending(hence the score is somewhat misleading). Had to watch Doubles by then.

CQ (9) Jennifer Kerr d. Anya Lamoreaux 6-3; 6-2

L wasn't bad at all. K really is a very good hitter. No wonder she won a set from Zhao the day before. Quite aggressive, hits very flat, and also comfortable at net. That's really a terrific recruiting by CU, acquiring those 3, Wan, Kerr and Ferrari(F has always excelled in doubles).

CQ (1) Samantha Martinelli d. (7) Annette Goulak 6-1; 7-6(2)

Two 'very familiar' players! Both ASICS girls as well lol, and have some serving problem. Nice match, both hitting and moving well(which means..Cali once again justified her Blue Chip status. She's yet again, alive till the final day. Won Consolation by default, she did beat Duong yesterday at HCP).
Now I really should ask Sam today about her college choice.

CQ (9) Ashley Yeah d. (9) Josie Frazier 6-1; 6-0

F had some problem against Y's aggression, and overall condition didn't seem too good.

R3 Audrey Boch-Collins d. Julia Lilien 6-4; 6-2

Arizonans were quite aggressive yesterday, both Frazier and Lilien. Naturally? errors followed as well lol. L really is a heck of a volleyer. ABC was just a bit more solid. Glad I watched ABC yesterday, since I haven't really seen her that much. Naturally concentrated on this match.

R3 (4) Sedona Gallagher d. Elvena Gevargiz 4-1Ret (inj)

Too bad.

R3 Anya Lamoreaux d. Paulina Ferrari 3-2Ret (inj)

R3 (9) Jennifer Kerr d. (9) Elle Christensen 1-0Ret (inj)

R3 (1) Samantha Martinelli d. Amy Huang 6-0; 6-2

Sam too good, but couldn't watch much(my priority was Lilien vs ABC)

R3 (7) Annette Goulak d. Flora Amiri 6-0; 6-2

Same here.

R3 (9) Josie Frazier d. (9) Julia Haynes 6-4; 1-6; 1-0(9)

Marquee match yesterday, and they didn't disappoint lol. F was uber-aggressive, so H was constantly on the defensive. And F in fact also defended well against H's sharp counterattacks.
I thought F was too aggressive, approaching the net. That's a prime recipe for defeat against good defensive players like H.  Vide Wozniacki's prime, others trying drop shots and getting passed lol.
But maybe it paid off in the end. Her net reflex was actually quite astounding, resulting in some overheads. Since she's not powerful enough to blow H off the court, maybe that was the correct tactic after all. Anyway played aggressively to the end, mp was her drive volley winner.

R3 (9) Ashley Yeah d. Michelle Deng 3-6; 6-2; 1-0(5)

Couldn't really watch much what with other matches, but the match seemed quite even. D is quite a sharp hitter, and doesn't lack variety either. Y was aggressive but also committed some errors. Later D began to make errors, probably her bane.

3Q Julia Lilien d. Katherine Nguyen 6-2; 5-7; 1-0(13)
3Q Elvena Gevargiz d. Shuchen Lin 6-1; 6-2
3Q Anya Lamoreaux d. Rebecca Berger 6-0; 6-1

3Q (9) Elle Christensen d. (6) Anastasiya Joyner 6-4; 6-3

HCP match. So impressed with Elle. She was zoning in, and was hitting super flat, moving J around.  J in fact showed very good defense returning all those sharp drives. That's quite a win against a good player like J, of course. Instantly became one of my favorite players, joining Kiss et. al lol. Really enjoyed this, too bad I couldn't concentrate on this match 100%(had to watch G14 matches, naturally, since they'll play at separate venue for Winter Nat.).

3Q Amy Huang d. Emily Zhou 7-5; 6-1

3Q Flora Amiri d. REGINA PITTS 6-2; 5-7; 1-0(7)

That's quite a win against a good hitter like Pitts.

3Q (9) Josie Frazier d. Danielle Willson 6-2; 6-1

Eh? Did I watch this.

3Q Michelle Deng d. Tatum Burger 6-2; 4-6; 1-0(6)

Couldn't really watch what with the court location, I see that Tatum eventually turned the match around in the 2nd set.

As I said I missed all MD matches at HCP. Quite a tournament for Pursell. And Rena Lin. Future Cards are at Florida now lol, playing Eddie Herr and all(Stanford recruits not just any Blue Chip, stellar Blue Chips lol, but there are exceptions like Kostas and Dillon), but her defeating Choy in 2 and Martinelli in 3 definitely merits attention. I'm sure coach Forood would take note lol.

Only 2 Doubles matches were played; They played 2 Consolation singles rounds at DSLP. Match finished after 9pm or something lol.

16 Arambulo/Cayetano d. (5) Gevargiz/Willson 8-5

Smelled an upset since G was netting tons from the 1st lol. She served well, but W couldn't, and made some errors later on. But basically the youngsters played quite well to win it. Girl wearing white cap again played stellar tennis(dunno who is who, just saw them play at Doubles Sectional), and the black attired girl was quite good at net, defending well.

16 (4) Henderson/Martinelli d. Evloeva/Nguyen 8-6

Last match. Sam played 3 matches yesterday lol. H was quite good at net, both defending and poaching, one of the deciding factors. N was quite good, had no trouble rallying with Sam(E I've seen her and praised her game before, not too prominent yesterday).  Sam is such an excellent doubles player, so give E/N credit for making the match super competitive.
