2/20 birding

Not good so far, finding target species; failed to spot both, Tricolored Heron and Laughing Gull. Yesterday failed to spot Eastern Bell's Vireo and Chestnut-sided Warbler. Oh well.

Still, not bad. Breeding male Red-breasted Merganser, Ridgway's Rail, Blue-winged Teal, etc. at Tijuana River marsh, and Bayfront park was even more impressive; at least 60 Brants! I first found a couple of it at Malibu Lagoon in my first year of birding, then was impressed with spotting at least 20 of it at Bolsa Chica last Fall or something. But those were quite far, especially Bolsa Chica ones.

Now, the Brants were resting or passing right in front of me lol.
Really, San Diego area is just too good. Remember I spotted Wilson's and Red-necked Phalaropes at Saltworks of San Diego Bay during the National?
However 'hard' 'local' experts Jon Dunn and Kimball Garrett 'try' lol, LA county is still trailing SD; 533 to SD's 541 species(and that should be the US record, the most by any county). Probably because SD partially lies on the migration flyway or something. I really envy SD residents..

Anyway, not only Brants; Redheads, Scaups, Dowitchers, Marbled Godwits, Western Sandpipers, Greater Yellowlegs, Surf Scoters, Glaucous-winged Gull, Osprey, Curlew, and Reddish Egret which was super-busy as usual..

No wonder bird festival is held here(from the 23th). Tempting, especially to find some cheap books, but probably won't, can't bother. Birdwalks and trips are too expensive anyway. Well, maybe I could get my guide signed by Kenn Kaufman.

After the match birded San Elijo Rios entrance, it was a dud. Because the westernmost path was blocked. There were plenty of passerines, but that's about it. The shorebirds and gulls were at Manchester Ave. side, and should bird there(still Rios Ave. entrance has vastly more species observed, should bird in the morning). Now not much spots left to bird, well I should bird La Jolla; Parasitic Jaeger and Wandering Tattler were spotted recently. A Brown Booby graced the spot 2 years ago.

My Total for SD is 154 species after LA county's 354 and OC's 164. Maybe should consult the list and try to add some more..
