UCSB at LBSU

Birding West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail wasn't too successful. I'm getting more discouraged about spotting those Eastern Warbler lol.

At the stadium, Doves, Starlings, House Sparrows, the lot.

Did Thompson graduate?

Left mid-match.

Scores from LBSU

UC Santa Barbara vs Long Beach State (Apr 15, 2017)
UC Santa Barbara 4, Long Beach State 2
Apr 15, 2017 at Long Beach, Calif. (Rhodes Tennis Center)

Was that tall girl MM? She should start next season.

Singles competition
1. Dubavets, Palina (UCSB) def. Maeva Razakasoa (LBSU) 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5)

Palina was the bigger hitter(so also had drop shot opportunities) but R herself is a flat hitter as well. Maybe Palina cleaned up her game later, making lesser errors.
Both said sorry after benefiting from the net cords.

2. Julie Gerard (LBSU) vs. Da Silveira, Natalie (UCSB) 4-6, 7-5, unfinished

Wasn't too impressed.

3. Lena Pacholski (LBSU) def. #123 Gilbertson, Jaimee (UCSB) 6-3, 2-6, 6-2

Course came to watch Lena, who impressed me during SW R. Not a particularly a big hitter, but can move the opponents around pretty sharply, using angles. She also has nice variety. But G returned lots of those drive attacks.

4. Stojic, Stefani (UCSB) def. Maren Helgo (LBSU) 6-4, 6-2

Stojic tended to send some balls long, but was just the better player. Attacked serve well. Points were long though. Helgo is another prospect I was impressed with during SW R.

5. Atanasson, Amanda (UCSB) def. Natalia Munoz (LBSU) 6-0, 6-4

6. Yamada, Stephanie (UCSB) def. Laura Eales (LBSU) 6-4, 7-5

I was actually quite impressed withe Eales today. Nice net play during doubles, and her one handed backhand was really good. Quite sharp. Actually she was the aggressor, but Yamada returned those attacks well; hence the long points.

Doubles competition

They actually warmed up before the match.

1. Julie Gerard/Maeva Razakasoa (LBSU) vs. #42 Baker, Melissa/Dubavets, Palina (UCSB) 4-4, unfinished

Baker moonballs but attacks weak returns. Later Palina'd passing shot attempts were blocked. And R's passing shots later was effective.

2. Laura Eales/Lena Pacholski (LBSU) def. Atanasson, Amanda/Stojic, Stefani (UCSB) 6-4

Stojic's serve return was bad. But methinks Lena served well.  Was rather impressed with Eales' net play. Stojic did play better later at net.

3. Maren Helgo/Natalia Munoz (LBSU) def. Da Silveira, Natalie/Yamada, Stephanie (UCSB) 6-2

Helgo slices deep. That's quite a win against DS/Y, who're quite good doubles players.

Match Notes
UC Santa Barbara 13-9, 6-1 BWC
Long Beach State 16-5, 6-2 BWC
