NCAA 5/13

Winner; Midwest
Loser; SEC?

NU, ND and Michigan advanced today, Michigan clinching the ticket to UGA.
On the other hand, SEC had poor showings, UK and MSU losing. LSU was severely tested against Tulsa. USC advanced though, defeating a tough opponent in Texas. Auburn as well, defeating FSU.
Now I'm reminded of 2009 TAMU NCAA(USC and UA both played the team tournament methinks. Chifchieva, Schofield..). Just like then, maybe I should drive there all the way...?

Score from NU;

#39 Northwestern 4, #18 Mississippi State 1

Doubles
1. #2 Jasmine Lee/Lisa Marie Rioux (MSU) vs. #15 Alex Chatt/Maddie Lipp (NU) 3-5, unfinished
2. Erin Larner/Lee Or (NU) def. Madison Harrison/Sara Lizariturry (MSU) 6-4
3. Rheeya Doshi/Jillian Rooney (NU) def. Jennifer Brown/Khrystyna Vozniak (MSU) 6-2
Order of finish: 3, 2*

Singles
1. #82 Erin Larner (NU) def. Lisa Marie Rioux (MSU) 6-0, 6-1
2. Maddie Lipp (NU) def. #113 Madison Harrison (MSU) 6-0, 7-6 (7-4)

Shocking denouement. MSU at least has an excuse in that Lee didn't play singles; was she injured? But Lee still played doubles, and they still lost the doubles point. And couldn't win a set in upper 2 positions. Rioux was very competitive against Kuhlman, so that's quite a surprising beatdown by Larner. Maybe her usual super aggression worked(she's quite an aggressive hitter), but anyhow she should be the player of the day.
Harrison losing in two was also rather surprising but Lipp is a seasoned veteran, a wily technician

From MSU website:

 "With two players battling ankle injuries sustained recently in practice - one that sidelined the senior All-American Lee in singles Saturday and another that hampered sophomore Anastasia Rentouli "

Too bad.
.

3. Anastasia Rentouli (MSU) vs. Rheeya Doshi (NU) 3-6, 6-4, 1-1, unfinished
4. Lee Or (NU) def. Khrystyna Vozniak (MSU) 2-6, 6-1, 6-3
5. Sara Lizariturry (MSU) def. Alex Chatt (NU) 7-5, 6-3
6. Jennifer Brown (MSU) vs. Jillian Rooney (NU) 5-7, 3-4, unfinished

Order of finish: 1, 2, 5, 4*

Score from Michigan;

Singles
No. 1 -- No. 26 Kate Fahey (U-M) vs. No. 22 Aldila Sutjiadi (UK), 4-6, 6-1, 2-2 abandoned
No. 2 -- No. 24 Brienne Minor (U-M) d. No. 103 Akvilė Paražinskait&#279 (UK), 7-5, 6-4
No. 3 -- Alex Najarian (U-M) vs. Mami Adachi (UK), 6-4, 7-6 (3)
No. 4 -- Chiara Lommer (U-M) d. Emily Fanning (UK), 6-0, 6-4
No. 5 -- Mira Ruder-Hook (U-M) d. Justina Mikulskyt&#279 (UK), 6-2, 6-1
No. 6 -- Morgan Chumney (UK) d. Valeria Patiuk (U-M), 7-6 (5), 6-3

Despite losing the doubles point, Michigan just outplayed UK, it seems. Especially #5 result is rather shocking, considering JM's firepower. Michigan pretty much prevailed at the upper positions, winning both 3,4 anchor positions. #2 match must've been exciting.

Doubles
No. 1 -- No. 6 Aldila Sutjiadi/Mami Adachi (UK) vs. No. 9 Alex Najarian/Kate Fahey (U-M), 5-6 abandoned
No. 2 -- Morgan Chumney/ Akvilė Paražinskait&#279 (UK) d. Brienne Minor/Chiara Lommer (U-M), 7-5
No. 3 -- Justina Mikulskyt&#279/Emily Fanning (UK) d. Mira Ruder-Hook/Valeria Patiuk (U-M), 7-5

Order of Finish: Doubles 2-3, Singles 5-4-2-6-3

Pac 12 rallied today, Oregon pushing NCSU to the limit. UCLA just won the doubles point against Pepperdine(stacking working again; Shibahara has been playing #3 doubles for a while now, although suffering a shocking loss against Oregon).

Cal. streaming is frankly crap. At least very bad on my Amazon Fire HD8. So didn't bother trying later on. Stanford's is vastly better lol. Concentrated on Hodges in doubles and Kadzhaya in singles. Sofiko was damn impressive, generally moving Ip around with deep and penetrating groundstrokes. Movement and defense was not bad either. Now playing #2..glad she's doing well.
Rice twitter was good, posting the matchup order nicely in a picture format.

So, should I dare go tomorrow.

Con;
6-hr drive, hence gas expense.
Fork-tailed Storm-Petrel is no longer sighted either at SF or at Monterey(rather hoping it might arrive at LA county areas like Pt. Dume).
'Peterson's guide to Seawatching' hasn't arrived yet at the local library; maybe I should read it before doing seawatching at Monterey or something.
Admission price + parking(I've been to both, and Cal. is especially bad in terms of parking).

Oh forgot that CMS vs Pomona will play NCAA regional final tomorrow..that's less than 30 min. drive.
