2017 National] G18 singles 8/10

I nominated Rabinowitz but she had an added advantage in playing doubles; 'Tart' and Ava Markham were also super impressive today. Adding Yaloz, plenty of Eastern players who impressed me today.

All across the board, plenty of Texans; but they all lost haha. Douglas, Zein(she's still alive in consolation though, Douglas is also playing it seems), Guevara, Crawley, Pielet..it also shows that Texas has plenty of depth.

Played favorite today. Pretty much concentrated on ma favorite players, especially in consolation singles(literally the last match) and doubles(no consolation, ugh).

Da Boss Lady came(coach Forood). Should've followed around and checked who she was watching lol. Gordon of course, but dunno who else. Li?

Coach Brown came, he mainly watched Bolton and Kalieva vs Gordon match methinks?

Oh and senile case #3; I said no Notre Dame, what was I thinking. Coach Dasso of course, and she even passed me by without her sunglasses!

Sara Anundsen; from UNC to Davidson to UVA. She's here.

Makarova's mom wore a Duke visor.

I was worried I spelled Casals wrong, I was thinking of Pablo Casals lol, famous cellist. Same last name, but was it indeed her watching SJ doubles yesterday with SJ's parents.

Oh Patel's brother introduced himself. I naturally complimented her sister's doubles prowess.

 4Q Jennifer Gadalov d. (33) Tatum Burger 6-1; 6-3

B rallied in the 2nd set, just glimpsed.

4Q Lauren Lemonds d. Dominique Stone Wd (inj)
4Q Valerie Ho d. Sophia Edwards Wo (inj)

4Q Julia Haynes d. Madison Hwang 6-4; 6-2

4Q (33) Mia Rabinowitz d. (33) Sophia Graver 6-2; 6-1

Watched a bit of the start of the 2nd set. After coming back from the bathroom break(I was fuming haha, I can't waste my valuable time!), Graver was quite composed, played pretty patiently. Still R outlasted her. Watching R is always a delight, she's such a good mover and technician. Even does a mini jumping bh lol.

4Q (17) McCartney Kessler d. (33) Grace Joyce 6-3; 6-4

Good match. Composed Joyce was formidable; was herding K left and right with her flat razor-like drives.  Served decently too methinks.

4Q Peyton Stearns d. (33) Kolie Allen 7-6(1); 6-2

That leg-thru again. Popular, Pepperdine, Michigan, Duke? etc.

4Q Jayci Goldsmith d. (33) Sonia Tartakovsky 6-3; 3-6; 10-7

Was super impressed with Tart today. Is she playing better every day? Lol. Fh, bh, beautiful form. Could attack sharply so put G on the defensive tons of times, that was some sight! Served well(she 'meditates' before serve haha), and also approached the net.
So thought G had to play aggressively, and she indeed did. The points were long, and she managed to win those rallies, many times Tart making errors. Such a tense match. MP was G's good unreturnable serve. Kudos to both! T seemed taller than G.

4Q (14) Hailey Baptiste d. (33) Julia Lilien 6-2; 7-6(4)

4Q (33) Niluka Madurawe d. (33) Amanda Meyer 6-3; 7-5

That's..quite a win...!

4Q (17) Samantha Martinelli d. Julieanne Bou 6-3; 6-1
4Q (33) Sophia Patel d. Alexa Butera 6-1; 6-1
4Q Jessica Anzo d. (33) Catherine Gulihur 3-6; 6-3; 10-7
4Q Alee Clayton d. (33) Maia Sung 1-6; 6-4; 10-8

4Q Ava Markham d. (33) victoria hu 7-5; 1-6; 10-7

Belatedly joined coach Kalbas and Thornqvist, sandwiched between them lol. Coach Harmon also came. Cornell coach too.
Markham, tall. Serve, good. Returned Hu's monstrous drives right back at her. Backhand angled return and approach volley winner. DF. Backhand slice. Probably a deserved win, not kidding here.

4Q Dalayna Hewitt d. (17) Carolyn Campana 7-6(7); 6-1

R5 (17) Alana Wolfberg d. (1) Usue Arconada Wo (inj)
5Q Jennifer Gadalov d. (17) Anna Brylin Wo (inj)
5Q (17) Anika Yarlagadda d. (9) Taylor Johnson Wo (inj)
5Q (17) Alana Wolfberg d. (17) Stephanie Schrage Wo (inj)
R4 Jennifer Gadalov d. (33) Janice Shin Wo (inj)
R4 (17) Anna Brylin d. Lauren Lemonds Wo (inj)
R4 (17) Anika Yarlagadda d. Valerie Ho 6-3; 6-0
R4 (9) Taylor Johnson d. Julia Haynes 6-1; 6-3

R4 (33) Mia Rabinowitz d. (17) Rachel Eason 7-6(1); 2-6; 10-6

Watched the TB or something. E was actually on the offensive lots of times, but R also managed to retrieve tons of those.

R4 (17) Alyvia Jones d. (17) McCartney Kessler 6-3; 6-3

K eventually couldn't return J's serve. But her bh was quite good, could actually win the bh duel against J. Actually J seemed many times rather overpowered, and that's saying something. But J tenaciously returned well, and it was K who eventually committed errors, many times trying to finish. Her serve was also a tad unstable, and dunno if it was an illusion but thought that she could move better(to return J's attacks).I

That game at 2-2 in the 2nd was crucial methinks. Took forever to finish, and J managed to finally break.  Certainly a tough match, and pretty much concentrated on this one.

R4 Peyton Stearns d. (7) Alexandra Sanford Wo (inj)

R4 Jayci Goldsmith d. (17) Hannah Zhao Wo (inj)
R4 (16) Chelsea Kung d. (14) Hailey Baptiste 3-6; 6-4; 10-3

R4 (33) Niluka Madurawe d. Abigail Desiatnikov Wo (inj)

R4 (17) Samantha Martinelli d. (17) Cali Jankowski Wo (inj)

R4 Naomi Cheong d. (33) Sophia Patel 6-2; 6-0
R4 (17) Stephanie Schrage d. Jessica Anzo 6-2; 5-7; 10-5

R4 (17) Alana Wolfberg d. Alee Clayton 6-3; 6-3

Clayton even volleys well. Watched a bit, and she certainly could pressure W with her aggression. GT coaches came by to watch this.

R4 (33) Natasha Subhash d. Ava Markham 6-3; 6-1

So impressed. So impressed with M. Does everything well. Moves well, hits well, can 'leg-thru' methinks lol, even volleys well. What can't she do lol. Serve return, good. Passed. Lobbed.
Once aced after allowing a service return winner lol, and after also making a volley winner, held that service game.
S's sharp angled drives were too much, coupled with her volley finishes.
Who was that friend of M after the match? Coleman?

R4 (17) Marlee Zein d. Dalayna Hewitt

16 (2) Claire Liu d. (15) Abigail Forbes 6-2; 6-2

16 (8) Whitney Osuigwe d. (17) Katie Volynets 7-5; 7-6(3)

Watched at times, not too much. HQ match, very intense. V was quite aggressive, even coming into the net. Handled O's power reasonably well. Also served well methinks. O as usual committed vastly more errors, it reminded me of that EB match(didn't really watch that match much either).

16 (3) Ashley Kratzer d. (13) Elysia Bolton 6-4; 6-0

That first set was quite tight. Again, have to envy UCLA. K not only can produce huge pace, she's also a competent drop shotter. I think both served well: mainly watched the 1st set.

16 (6) Michaela Gordon d. Elvina Kalieva 6-1; 6-2

Jones is not the only player with a Golden Backhand. Gordon's bh is pretty good as well. Was quite aggressive actually, and was very emotional. Once yelled OMG after a failed overhead and she was leading 4-1 in the 1st haha. Kalieva replied in kind by DFing..lol.
Kalieva, great form. Really moves well, returns well, and hit well. But her counterattacks encountered a veritable wall in Gordon today, and after long rallies, it was K who eventually crumbled. But what a tournament nonetheless.
Gordon also served pretty well methinks.

16 (5) Ashley Lahey d. (33) Salma Ewing 6-1; 6-4

16 (12) caty mcnally d. (4) Maria Mateas 4-6; 6-4; 6-1

Couldn't really watch but M seemed to be playing better today. Also volleyed pretty well methinks. Mostly watched the 1st set methinks, M was on the defensive lots of times(but of course M's defense is good).

16 (33) Kelly Chen d. (11) Ellie Douglas 7-6(4); 6-0

At least Duke coaches(or only coach Ashworth?) were seen watching this match.

16 (10) Ann Li d. (1) Usue Arconada 6-4; 6-3

Just watched a bit, seemed pretty tight. Li could produce monstrous pace, and A's defense wasn't bad.
